The Stanford Golf Club – Men’s Section (also known as the Stanford Men's Golf Club) was established in 1930 and has operated continuously since then except for a short period during World War II. Stanford Men’s Golf Club is one of three sections within Stanford Golf Club (the other two being the 18 hole women’s section and the 9 hole women’s section). Stanford Golf Club operates independently from Stanford University and is separate and distinct from Stanford Golf Course membership. Stanford Golf Club has sought to promote golf within the Stanford community since its inception.

Originally, it was required for Stanford Golf Course members to join one of the three Stanford Golf Club sections. The three sections were not open to non-Stanford Golf Course members. By the mid 2000s, those with Stanford Golf Course playing privileges were able to join the Stanford Men’s Golf Club without having to be a Stanford Golf Course member (and subsequently Stanford Golf Course members were no longer required to become a member of one of the Stanford Golf Club sections). Notwithstanding this evolution, there continues to be strong overlap, mutual support, and close coordination between the two entities. The Stanford Men’s Golf Club organizes tournaments and events; and provides its members an official World Handicap System index (GHIN index) under its Stanford University GC account maintained with the USGA. Stanford Golf Course members (separate and distinct from Stanford Men’s Golf Club membership) enjoy preferred access to and greens fees at Stanford Golf Course (among other benefits).
