THE 2026 CARDINAL CUP
YEAR-END INCENTIVE TOURNAMENT
October 10, 2026
The Cardinal Cup is a year-end tournament honoring those in the Men’s Club who have most supported our tournament schedule. The Event will be held on Saturday, October 10, 2026. Each Men’s Club Regular Member becomes eligible for the Cardinal Cup competition by entering one of the weekend regular tournaments. 36 Men’s Club Members will win spots in the event based on their participation and performance in those tournaments. The club will maintain the current standings here.
1. Tournament Format. The Cardinal Cup will be a Ryder Cup type tournament comprised of two teams of 18 Stanford Men’s Club Members each.
2. Player Qualification. The 36 players with the most Cardinal Cup Points during the Season will qualify for the Cardinal Cup. For a player to be eligible to participate in the Cardinal Cup, they must have played in at least 3 tournaments during the season. If any qualifiers are unable to play in the event, their places will be filled by the next highest Cardinal Cup points earners who are available.
3. How Points are Earned. For each tournament (excluding Senior Exchanges and NCGA team events), Cardinal Cup points will be awarded as follows:
a. Participation. Each Member in the tournament will get 5 points, including those who were on the final Waiting List but were not added to the field. Participation points are doubled for the President’s Cup and the Directors’ Cup.
b. Performance. For regular Tournaments, additional points will be awarded to each Men’s Club Member who, individually or as a part of a team, finishes in the top 3 spots in their flight as follows:
i. 1st Place in Flight – 7 points
ii. 2nd Place in Flight – 5 points
iii. 3rd Place in Flight – 3 points
Performance points are doubled for the President’s Cup and the Directors’ Cup.
c. For the Club Championship: (a) 5 Participation Points will be awarded to each player playing at least one qualifying medal round and an additional 5 Participation Points to each player playing at least one match; and (b) Performance Points will be awarded for 1st place (14 points), 2nd (10) and 3rd (6; 3rd Place awarded to both players losing the semifinal matches).
4. Formation of Teams. Once all 36 qualifiers have been determined, the Tournament Committee will divide the players into two teams: the Leland Stanford Junior team will be the 18 youngest qualifiers, and the Leland Stanford Senior team will be the 18 oldest qualifiers.
5. Matches. To determine opponents in the Matches, Players from each team will be seeded by Index in descending order from 1 to 18. Players will compete with the similarly ranked player on the other Team. Within each foursome, Match One (holes 1-6) is modified Alternate Shot, Match Two (holes 7-12) is Net Better Ball and Match Three (holes 13-18) is Singles. A match winner earns 1 point, a tie ½ point each, so in each of the nine foursomes, 4 points are available. In case of a tie between the teams for the Cardinal Cup, we will have a sudden death net better ball playoff between players selected by the team captains.
6. Fees. There is no cost to earn points to qualify for the Cardinal Cup. There will be a modest fee TBD (approximately $40) in order to participate in the Cardinal Cup event, and daily fee-paying participants will be responsible for their greens fees.
7. Revision of Rules. The Board may change or adjust the Rules above at any time.
